Hansen in First, Aggies in Second at Big West

SAN JACINTO, Calif. - Matt Hansen blitzed The Country Club of Soboba Springs course for a 5-under 67 on Sunday to take the early individual lead and help lead the UC Davis men's golf team into second place in the team standings after the first round of the Big West Championship.

Nicolas Noya is tied for fourth after opening with a 2-under 70. The second-seeded Aggies shot a 1-over 289 and trail top-seeded Cal State Fullerton (-1) by just two shots. Hawaii (+2) is just behind the Aggies in third place while Long Beach State (+7) and Cal State Northridge are tied for fourth.

Ben Corfee fired a 75 and is tied for 20th for UC Davis, Joshua Granger is tied for 30th after carding a 77, and Luke Vivolo is tied for 37th after finishing with a 78.

The Aggies have won three Big West titles since 2009 and are looking for their first since 2012. They took their first step toward a return to the top by challenging in Sunday's first round.

Hansen, who's coming off his second career win with his first-place finish at last week's El Macero Classic, opened the championship by making seven birdies and giving up just two bogeys. He had a birdie on the par-4 first hole and made his turn 2 under. Four birdies over a five-hole span, and five birdies on the back overall, pushed him into the lead.

Hansen, ranked 61st, has a one-stroke lead over No. 33 Mark Anguiano of Cal State Fullerton. Anguiano had a 68. Hawaii's Nainoa Calip is two strokes back in third while Hawaii's Brian Lee is tied four fourth with Noya, three shots off the pace.



Noya had four birdies and was even after 16 holes before picking up a key birdie on the par-5 18th hole to come in with a 70. Corfee had three birdies on Sunday and was just 1 over after nine holes. He was 1 under over his final five.

Granger struggled to 7 over at his turn but then turned it around impressively to go 2 under on the back - finishing with birdies on his last two holes - to shoot 77. Vivolo had three birdies, including one on the par-4 17th to help him end his day on a high note.

The Aggies will play with Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine in Monday's second round. They'll begin teeing off at 9:10 a.m. The tournament ends Tuesday with the winner earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Championships.
