Corfee Leads UC Davis in Second Round at Auburn

DAVIS, Calif. - Ben Corfee shot a 1-over 73 on Friday while Luke Vivolo had a 75 on his way to a tie for 13th place as the UC Davis men's golf team finished the second round of the NCAA Auburn Regional at Auburn University Club in 12th place.

Senior Matt Hansen and redshirt freshman Nicolas Noya each carded 78s while senior Joshua Granger finished with an 80. Corfee's solid round put him in a tied for 23rd while Hansen and Noya are tied for 46th and 61st, respectively. Granger is tied for 71st.

The top five teams after Saturday's final round will move on to the NCAA Finals which will be contested in Hutchison, Kan., and hosted by Wichita State later this month. UC Davis, which shot a 16-over 304 on Friday and is 28 over after 36 holes, is 11 shots behind Texas and BYU which are tied for fifth.

Top-ranked Alabama continues to lead the field, opening a 15-stroke lead over host Auburn. The Crimson tied were 4 under on Friday and are 5 under overall while Auburn (586) is 10 over. Kennesaw State (588) and Virginia Tech (592) are in third and fourth, respectively.

Vivolo, who opened the regional with a 71 which put him in a tie for fourth, started his round on Friday with a double-bogey on the par-4 10th hole. But he rebounded to fire seven pars and a birdie to make his turn just 1 over. He had a birdie on the par-5 seventh to spark his back nine. Vivolo is 2 over overall.

Corfee moved up the leaderboard with his 73, picking up a birdie on each side of the course and both of them coming on par-5 holes. He had 14 pars and three bogeys as well, moving to 4 over after two rounds.

Thanks to an early birdie on the par-5 12th, Hansen played the opening nine holes even but was 6 over on the back to go to 9 over. Noya improved his score from Thursday by one shot, carding a birdie on the 12th hole while covering his front nine 2 over. He was 4 over on the back and is 13 over overall. Granger is 19 over, highlighting his day with birdies on the par-5 fourth and 12th holes.

The Aggies will start their final round on the 10th hole beginning at 6:20 a.m. (PDT) on Saturday. UC Davis will play with Louisville and Sam Houston State.
