PULLMAN, Wash. - Tyler Raber fired a 1-under 71 on Friday during the second round of the NCAA Pullman Regional and remains in strong contention to advance to the NCAA Div. I Men's Golf Finals later this month.
Raber is currently tied for eighth with one round remaining. The top five teams advance to the national finals along with the highest-finishing player not on one of those teams.
Currently, any player ahead of Raber in the standings is on a team that's at least tied among the top five while two golfers tied with him are either playing as an individual or on a team outside the top five.
"He's right in there and has a very good shot at (advancing)," said head coach Cy Williams. "Hopefully things will go our way."
Raber opened the tournament at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Thursday with a spectacular round of 67. Starting on the back nine on Friday, he birdied the par-5 10th hole and then added birdies on the 12th, 14th and 17th holes to make his turn 1 under. A birdie on the par-4 2nd hole and a bogey on the 9th combined with seven pars to keep him 1 under for the day.
Raber is tied with Mason Casper of Utah Valley, Virginia Tech's Bryce Chalkley and Yi Keun Chang of USC at 6-under 138. He's just one shot out of sixth and four strokes from fourth place. The field, however, is chasing USC's Sam Smith who followed his opening 62 with a round of 64 on Friday to move to 18 under for the regional.
"Tyler played really well again today," he said. "He literally only missed three shots today and unfortunately they cost him with bogeys. It was definitely a lot tougher out there today. Pins were tucked a lot more. There were definitely a lot more scores over par."
Top-ranked Cal is 35 under after two rounds and has an 11-shot lead over No. 13 USC (-24). Saint Mary's (-19) is third, No. 11 TCU (-15) is fourth and San Diego State (-13) and Pacific (-13) are tied for the crucial fifth position.
The tournament concludes on Saturday. Raber will tee off at 9:53 a.m. on the 10th hole and will play with Bernie D'Amato of Princeton and Chris Sticek of St. Francis (Pa.). Raber is playing in his third career regional.
