Raber Posts Career-Best Postseason Finish

PULLMAN, Wash. - UC Davis men's golf standout Tyler Raber saw his outstanding Aggie career end at the NCAA Div. I Pullman Regional despite posting a career-best postseason finish with his tie for 23rd place on Saturday.

Raber who was in strong contention after three rounds to advance to the NCAA Finals, shot a final-round 4-over 76 at Palouse Ridge Golf Course. The senior from El Macero, Calif., was 2-under 214 overall after opening the tournament with an impressive round of 67 on Thursday and a 1-under 71 on Friday.

Qualifying for this week's championship as an individual, Raber was hoping to earn the regional's lone individual berth to the national finals. The top five team finishers - Cal, TCU, Saint Mary's, USC and Ball State - also advanced to the final. Rodolfo Cazaubon (-7) of North Texas shot 68 on Saturday, vaulting from 25th place to sixth and earning the individual berth.

Raber began his final round on the 10th hole and was 2 over after five holes before picking up his lone birdie on the par-4 15th. He was 4 over after eight holes before carding 10 consecutive birdies the remainder of the round. Raber was tied for sixth after three rounds while sitting near the top of the leaderboard for most of the first 36 holes.

He finished the tournament with 12 birdies and played the back nine 2 under for the week. Raber was even for the front nine, collecting 23 pars, two birdies and just two bogeys.

Top-ranked Cal posted a 20-shot win at the Pullman Regional, finishing 43 under. Ball State earned the fifth qualifying spot to nationals after beating San Diego State in a playoff. USC's Sam Smith and Cal's Michael Weaver shared medalist honors after finishing 14 under.

Raber was making his third NCAA postseason appearance and had his highest career finish. He earned a pair of All-Big West first-team appearances and was honorable mention as a freshman. Raber won the Pacific Invitational during his sophomore season, was twice named the Big West Golfer of the Month and had a career-low 63 in the second round at Pacific.
