SUNRIVER, Ore. - Francis Marion fired a 4-under par, 28, and holds a three-stroke lead over Western Washington and Colorado-Colorado Springs following the first day of play at the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championships, played Tuesday at the par 72, 7,296-yard Crosswater Club.

Francis Marion was one of three teams to finish the first round under par as Dylan Keylock led the way with a 4-under par, 68. Teammate Fredrik Ohlsson finished at 2-under par, 70, as the pair combined to keep Francis Marion in negative numbers. Trailing Western Washington and Colorado Springs were two teams, Cal State Stanislaus and North Alabama, as both schools finished at 4-over par, 292, eight strokes off the lead.

Rounding out the top 10 were Cal State Bakersfield (295) in sixth, Chico State (296) in seventh, UC Davis (298) in eighth, West Florida (299) in ninth and South Carolina-Aiken (301) in 10th.

Individually, Keylock and Jon Olson of Colorado Springs share the first-round lead after matching 4-under par, 68's. The two hold a two-stroke lead over a group of five players, who are two stokes off the pace at 70. UC Davis' Scott Gordon was the highest Aggie finisher on Tuesday, completing the track in 1-under par, 71. Also playing for the Aggies were Brett Borchers, who finished tied for 36th with an opening round of 75. Jay Westerlund and Eric Restrepo finished 4-over par with identical 76's while Chris Kilkenny finished tied for 86th at 80.

"It was a good opening round for us," said Aggie Head Coach Cy Williams. "Probably the most important thing to do on the first day is not shoot yourself out of the tournament. We played well but definitely have room for improvement. Scott really played solid golf all afternoon."

UC Davis will tee-off in the afternoon round on Tuesday, once again with West Florida and Cal State Bakersfield. The tournament continues with 18 holes each day through Friday.
