DURHAM, N.C. - Sophomore Matt Robinson fired a 2-under-par 70 in the second round to finish at 145 strokes for the day, helping UC Davis hold a share of 10th place at the Rod Myers Invitational men's golf tournament at the Duke University Golf Club Saturday. The Aggies are tied with UNC Greensboro at 12-over 588 heading into Sunday's final round.
Wake Forest led the 12-team field with an 18-under-par 558 total, with Oregon (564) and Vanderbilt (565) giving chase in the team standings. Oregon's Norman Xiong leads the individual leaderboard at 133 strokes, 11 under par.
Robinson fired a 3-over 75 in the first 18 holes then improved to a 70 in the second round to jump 15 places in the individual standings. He birdied three of his last seven holes to rally to an under-par round. Senior Evan Knight also made a strong move in the second round, going from a 4-over 76 in the first round to a 1-under 71 the second time through the course. Robinson and Knight finished T26th and T37th heading into Sunday's action.
Freshman Thomas Hutchison made his collegiate debut with scores of 73 and 76 to finish in an eight-way tie for 50th place that includes junior Jesse Bratz and his 74 and 75 scores. Junior Ryan Han carded 76 and 74 for a 6-over 150 total to round out the UC Davis field.
The Rod Myers Invitational, held on the 7,154 campus course, is named for the long-time Duke head coach. The tournament wraps up Sunday with UC Davis teeing off from the 10th hole starting at 8:15 local time (5:15 a.m. Pacific). Live scoring is available via Golfstat.
