UCLA Walks Away With Gold Rush Title; Aggies Finish 9th

CALIMESA, Calif. - The host UCLA Bruins (841) fired a final round 12-under 276, the low round of the tournament, to post a three-round total of 23-under and take a 13-stroke victory over runner-up Stanford at the inaugural Gold Rush California Collegiate Showcase on Saturday at the PGA of Southern California Golf Course. UC Davis shot a final round of 9-over 297 and finished in ninth place with a two-day score of 874, 33 strokes behind the Bruins.

Stanford (854) fired an even-par 288 on Saturday to finish in second place, three strokes ahead of UC Riverside (857). The Highlanders shot an 8-under 279 on Saturday, the day's second-best score. Saint Mary's (859) and UC San Diego (866) rounded out the top five.

Senior Eric Restrepo led the Aggies on Saturday as he shot a 1-over, 73. Restrepo made the turn at even before posting birdies on No.10 and 12 to get to 2-under. A bogey on 14 pulled him back to 1-under, where he stayed until 18, when he recorded a double bogey to finish the day at 1-over and 4-over for the tournament, tied for 41st. Sophomore Steven Strong, who began the day in a tie for fourth at 6-under, posted a 2-over 74 on Saturday to finish the three-round event at 4-under, 212, and in a tie for eighth place.

Senior Jay Westerlund posted a 3-over 75 on Saturday and finished at 7-over 223 and in a tie for 59th place while junior Erik Hill also carded a 75 on Saturday to finish the tournament in a tie for 102nd place at 14-over, 230. Freshman Ramie Sprinkling, playing as an individual, shot a 4-over 76 on Saturday and finished the tournament at 7-over, 223, tying with Westerlund for 59th place.

The Gold Rush Classic featured 29 men's teams, all from California, along with the defending NCAA Champion UCLA women's team, competing on both the Champions and Legends courses at the PGA of Southern California. UC Davis will next be in action on Sept. 27 when it competes at the University of Washington Husky Invitational.
