BREMERTON, Wash. - Matt Hansen, Tyler Raber and Matt Seramin are tied for 13th while Jonny Baxter is tied for 18th as the UC Davis men's golf team is in fourth place after two rounds at the season-opening Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational, hosted by Washington at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton, Wash.
UC Davis owns a two-stroke lead over San Diego State, which ranked seventh by Golfstat at the end of last season, and are nine strokes ahead of fifth-ranked Oregon. The Aggies sit just two strokes back of No. 36 Saint Mary's, which is third at 11 over. Host Washington leads the field at three under while Texas A&M is in second at three over.
The Aggies shot a collective 13-over 589 behind four top-20 finishes after 36 holes at the par-72, 7,124 Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Complex. Hansen, Raber and Seramin each finished at 3-over 147 while Baxter shot a 4-over 148. Mike Brockington rounds out UC Davis' lineup and is tied for 53rd.
Hansen carded a 75 for his first round, but rebounded to shoot even during his second round. He opened with six straight pars, but a bogey on the par-4 seventh hole moved him to one over where he would stay as he closed his front nine. The junior's back nine was highlighted by three birdies as he improved on his first round score by three strokes.
Raber found himself as high as sixth place during the course of his first round as he finished his front nine even then closed out with an eagle on the final hole of the day to finish at 1-over 73. His second round featured 15 pars and a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole, but an unfortunate double bogey on hole 14 left him at 2-over 74 and three over for the day.
Seramin improved on his first round 3-over 75 by three strokes, carding a 72 at the end of round two. He totaled five birdies during his second round, three of which came during the final five holes of the day. After dropping to two over, he birdied the 14th and 15th holes to get back to even, then closed with his fifth birdie of the round.
Baxter sits just one stroke back of his Aggie teammates. After shooting a 75 to open the day, the Aggie junior improved by two strokes in his second round to finish with a 73. He was at two over through five holes, then birdied hole six to move to one over and closed out his front nine with a second birdie. He opened the back nine with two straight bogeys, however, to drop back to two over, but he rebounded with a birdie on the par-3 12th hole, then closed with six straight pars to finish at 1-over 73.
Brockington's rounds were highlighted by three birdies apiece. In his first round, his back nine featured two birdies and seven pars while he also birdied two of his first nine holes to open his second round. He finished at 12-over for the day.
UC Davis will tee off beginning at 8:15 a.m. as the final 18 holes conclude on Tuesday.
