Aggies finish ninth in 2017 season opener

DURHAM, N.C. - Senior Evan Knight carded his team’s low round of 2-under-par 70 to finish in a tie for 24th place overall, leading UC Davis in the Rod Myers Invitational at the Duke University Golf Club Sunday. The Aggies finished ninth as a team with a three-round total of 881, one stroke ahead of UNC Greensboro and eight behind East Carolina.

Wake Forest won the overall team title at 29-under-par 835, seven strokes in front of the host Blue Devils. Wake senior Will Zalatoris and Oregon sophomore Norman Xiong shared the co-medalist honors at 12-under 204.

Knight’s eagle on the 550-yard 14th highlighted his Sunday round, as did a clean sheet on the front nine en route to his 70. He jumped 13 places on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 24th with a 1-over 217 total. Knight vaulted ahead of sophomore teammate Matt Robinson, whose 35 on the front nine finished him with a 75 on the day and a t29th-place total of 220.

Aggie junior Ryan Han also enjoyed his best round of the season-opening tournament on Sunday, firing birdies on the third, seventh and ninth holes to finish at 1-over 73 and t40th for the tournament. Meanwhile, junior Jesse Bratz and freshman Thomas Hutchison each shot 75 on Sunday to complete their weekends in a tie for 50th.

UC Davis completes its fall schedule with the Marquette Invitational (Oct. 1-3) and the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 8-9).
