Kansas Leads, UC Davis in 10th After First Day Of Kansas Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Andrew Price fired a two-round score of 8-under par, 136, to boost the University of Kansas to a 12-stroke lead over Wichita State following the first day of action at the Kansas Men's Golf Invitational, played on the par 72, 6,950-yard Alvamar Golf Course Monday afternoon.

The host Jayhawks were the only team to break par both rounds as they began with a 1-under 287 in the morning and followed that with a 4-under , 284, in the afternoon round for a first-day total of 571. Wichita State (583) improved six strokes over its morning round to finish with a 1-over par, 289 in the afternoon. North Texas (586), Iowa State (587), and Louisville (588) and Oral Roberts (588) rounded out the top five. Oral Roberts was the only other team to break par on the day, posting a 1-under, 287, in the afternoon round.

UC Davis finished the first day of play in 10th place with a two-round total of 597. UC Davis is only 10 strokes out of fourth place entering the final round.

Individually, Price posted rounds of 67-69 for a first-day total 136, five strokes ahead of Illinois State's Brian Anderson (141). Oral Roberts' Luke Scrymgeour (142) and Charlie Woo (142) of Louisville are tied for third, six strokes off the pace while Wichita State's Judd Easterling (143) and Iowa State's Tyler Swanson (143) are tied for fifth, seven strokes back.

The Aggies were paced by junior Eric Restrepo (74-72-146) and is tied for 15th, 10 strokes off the lead. Freshman Louie Bishop (74-73 - 147), playing in his first collegiate event, is tied for 21st after Monday's play. Senior Scott Gordon (77-71 - 148) is tied for 24th, as he was the only Aggie to break par with a 1-under, 71, in the afternoon round. Sophomore Brett Borchers (77-79 - 156) is tied for 71st while sophomore Jason Gambonini (79-79 - 158) is tied for 78th.

 

 

"We were okay for our first competition of the season," said Aggie head coach Cy Williams. "We played better in the second round and our top three competed well all afternoon. It was great to see Louie (Bishop) have a solid performance in his first collegiate event. We are expecting to do some good things tomorrow."

Play concludes at the Kansas Invitational with a final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
