LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Sparked by strong play on Sunday from Matt Hansen and Luke Vivolo who are each tied for 15th, the UC Davis mens golf team is tied for third after two rounds of the WIndon Memorial Classic hosted by Northwestern.
Hansen and Vivolo each had 72s in both their rounds on Sunday and led a solid Aggie showing that has four of its players in the top 33. Jonny Baxter, who opened with a 3-under 69, is just a shot over par and is tied for 22nd, and Ben Corfee is tied for 33rd at 3 over after highlighting his day with a 70 in the first round. Mike Brockington is tied for 77th at 12 over.
UC Davis shot a 5-under 283 team score in the morning round and then had 297 in the afternoon to finish the day 4-over 580. The Aggies are tied with Coastal Carolina and Marquette as they chase leader Kent State (569) and host Northwestern (572) at the top of the 16-team standings.
Hansen had seven birdies over his two rounds and played each side of The Knollwood Course at par. He had three birdies over the final seven holes of his day to battle back from 3 over to get even.
Vivolo posted a pair of birdies in each round, including two on the course's front nine in the second round. He only had four bogeys on Sunday. Baxter's 69 featured five birdies including two on his first four holes. He was 2 under on the back nine.
Corfee was also impressive in the first round, playing 15 holes 3 under. He had just one bogey. He had a 77 in the second round. Brockington had four birdies overall, highlighting his day by playing the course's back nine just a shot over par.
Chris Neill of Michigan is 5 undre and leads three other players by a shot. Fourteen players broke par on Sunday.
UC Davis will begin the final round at 6:45 a.m. (Pacific) on Monday.
