LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Senior Matt Hansen finished among the top 15 places for the second tournament in a row as the UC Davis men's golf team tied for seventh on Monday at the Windon Memorial Classic, hosted and won by Northwestern University.
Hansen posted his third consecutive par round to finish even for the event, tying for 13th in the 87-player field. Jonny Baxter shot a 2-over 74 and tied for 22nd at 3 over, Luke Vivolo concluded with a 79 to tie for 31st at 7 over, and Ben Corfee tied for 43rd after his final-round 78 left him 9 over. Mike Brockington shot a 77 and tied for 79th at 17 over.
The Aggies were 13 over on Monday, tying Arkansas for seventh place at 17-over 881 overall. Northwestern (860) rallied with the best score of the day, shooting par-288 and finishing 4 under to beat second-place Kent State (863) by three shots. They were the only two teams to break par. Michigan (872) was third followed by Ohio State and Purdue (875), which tied for fourth.
Michigan's Chris O'Neill had a final-round 69 and took home medalist honors at 8 under.
Hansen had a bogey on his second hole before stringing together nine consecutive pars. A bogey on the par-3 12th hole put him 2 over, but birdies on the par-4 14th and par-5 16th evened his round which is where he finished. Hansen tied for 15th at the season-opening Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at the University of Washington last week.
Baxter was 1 under for his first nine holes, combining three birdies and two bogeys. He played the back nine of The Knollwood Course 3 over to finish with a 74. Vivolo had a rough start with a double-bogey and was 6 over at the turn, but used a birdie on the 16th hole to help cover the last nine holes just a shot above par.
Corfee had six bogeys in his last round but played the back side just a pair of shots above par. Brockington's only blemish on his front nine was a double-bogey on the par-3 7th while his last nine holes featured a birdie on the par-5 10th.
The Aggies will have a short break from the schedule before returning to action at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Cal on Oct. 14-15.
