Westerlund Tied For 2nd, Aggies In 7th After First Day At Husky Invitational

BREMERTON, Wash. - Southern California fired an opening round of 4-under, 356, then came back in the afternoon to shoot the low sore of the round to sit at 5-under, 715, holding a 19-stroke lead over Brigham Young following Monday's first day of play at the 2004 Opus NW Husky Invitational at the par 72, 7,073-yard Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. UC Davis finished the first day at 24-over (744) and sits in seventh place, 10 shots behind second-place BYU.

USC was the only team to finish the day under par and the only team in the field to break par in either round. The Trojans hold a 19-stroke lead over BYU (734). Coastal Carolina (735) is 20 strokes off the pace while UC Irvine (736) is in fourth place with Minnesota (737) and host Washington (737) rounding out the top five.

The Aggies opened the day with a 13-over in the morning round then came back in the afternoon to fire an 11-over 371, finished the first day with a score of 744.

Individually, USC's Taylor leads the field after rounds of 68-71 for a first-day score of 5-under, 139. Wood holds a one-stroke lead over UC Davis' Jay Westerlund (71-69 - 140) and USC teammate Ben Hayes (140). BYU's Oscar Alvarez is two shots off the pace after rounds of 73-68 (141) while BYU's Greg Machtale (142) and Minnesota's Josh Persons (142) are tied for fifth, three strokes behind Wood.

For the Aggies, Westerlund led the way as his second round included six birdies and just two bogeys en route to a 3-under, 69. Westerlund is just one of nine players to finish the first two rounds under par. Teammate Steven Strong is in a tie for 23rd after rounds of 77-71 for a first-day score of 148, 4-over par. Ramie Sprinkling (151) is in a tie for 33rd while Erik Hill (153) is tied for 36th. Louie Bishop, who opened with a 1-over 73, followed that with an 84 in the afternoon round to finish the day tied for 50th at 157. Senior Eric Restrepo never got it going and finished in a tied for 58th at 160.

 

 

Play concludes at the Opus NW Husky Invitational on Tuesday with a final 18 holes.
