GOLF, Ill. - Tom Johnson fired a three-round total, 206, 10-under par to lead Northwestern to a 25-stroke victory over Duke to capture the team title at the Windon Memorial Classic on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,745-yard Glen View Club. UC Davis finished the three-round tournament with a 906 total and in 12th place.
Northwestern's 13-under par, 275, on Tuesday was the low round of the tournament and was the only score under 291 for the round. Duke, which trailed Northwestern by five shots entering the day, finished with a 7-over par, 295, giving the Blue Devils a two-day total of 873, three strokes better than third-place Stanford (876). Georgia Southern (879) and North Florida (879) tied for fourth to round out the top five teams. Six of the top 100 teams, according to GolfWeek's collegiate rankings, participated in the tournament, including No.7 Oklahoma State, which finished at 886, 38 shots off the lead and in sixth place.
Johnson's 6-under par, 66, on the final day was the lowest round of the tournament and gave the Wildcat junior a four-stroke victory over teammate Scott Harrington (210) and Stanford's Jim Seki (210). Another Wildcat, Bjorn Widerstedt (211) and North Florida's John Limanti (211), tied for fourth, five strokes off the pace.
Junior Jay Westerlund led UC Davis as he finished the three-round tournament tied for 17th at 4-over par, 220, 14 shots off the lead. Sophomore Eric Restrepo (227) tied for 36 while junior Chris Kilkenny (229) tied for 43rd. Junior Scott Gordon (234) finished the tournament tied for 58th and junior Josh Williams, playing his first tournament as an Aggie, came in tied for 60th at 235.
UC Davis will next be in action October 7-8 when it competes in the Grand Canyon Invitational in Goodyear, Ariz.
