Northwestern Wins; Aggies Finish Tied For 14th At Windon Memorial Classic

LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Northwestern University fired a final round of 3-over 287 to defeat Duke University by four strokes and captured its own 2004 Windon Memorial Classic played Tuesday on the par 71, 6,849-yard Conway Farms Golf Course. UC Davis finished Tuesday with its best round of the tournament to finish in a tie for 14th with Notre Dame.

Northwestern (865) entering Tuesday's final round with a one stroke lead over Purdue (870) and two shots over Kent State (87), but it was Duke (869) and Minnesota (873) that made the biggest charge as each team fired rounds of 2-under, 282. Duke jumped all the way from sixth entering the final round to second while Minnesota went from seventh to five, with Purdue and Kent State sandwiched in between.

The Aggies improved each round of the tournament, going from 309 on Monday to 301 in the second round before finishing Tuesday with a 296 as they moved from 17th following round two to a tie for 14th.

Individually, defending champion Peter Richardson of Purdue held off the late charges of Duke's Ryan Blaum and Minnesota's Josh Persons to claim a two-stroke victory over a group of four players. Richardson's final round of 2-over 74 gave him a three-round score of 1-under 212, the only player to finish the event under par. Blaum and Persons each shot final rounds of 3-under 68's, to finish in a group along with North Florida's Tyler Brown and Kent State's Peter Laws at 1-over, 214.

For UC Davis, senior Jay Westerlund finished his three rounds with a score of 225, 13 strokes off the lead and tied for 40th. Sophomore teammate Steven Strong had the low Aggie round of the day with a 1-under, 70, to finish tied for 44th at 226. The 70 also marked the low Aggie round of the tournament. Senior Eric Restrepo tied for 55th at 228 while freshman Ramie Sprinkling (231) finished tied for 70th and sophomore Louie Bishop (234) was tied for 77th.

 

 

UC Davis is next in action on October 23-25 when it competes at The Nelson Invitational, hosted by Stanford University.
