GLENVIEW, Ill. - The University of Minnesota opened the day with a 5-under par, 283, the low round of the day, then followed it up with an even-par 288 during the afternoon round and holds a three-stroke lead over Illinois following the first day of play at the 2003 Windon Memorial Classic, played Monday on the par 72, 7,058-yard North Shore Country Club.
UC Davis fired rounds of 303 and 299 for a first-day total of 602 and sit in 14th place, 31 strokes off the lead.
Minnesota (571) had three of its four players finish the day under par to lead Big 10 foe Illinois (574) by three strokes. Purdue (577) is in third place, six strokes back while host Northwestern (579) and Toledo (579) are tied for 4th after two rounds of play.
Individually, Purdue's Peter Richardson will take a four-stroke lead into the final day of play after he fired rounds of 67-68 for a 135 total. Illinois' Joe Affrunti (139) is four strokes back while a group of three players, including Louisiana State's Heath West (140), Northwestern's Casey Strunk (140) and Minnesota's Justin Smith (140) round out the top five, five strokes off the lead.
UC Davis sophomore Brett Borchers was the top Aggie finisher as he posted rounds of 77-71 for a 148 total, tied for 33rd place. Freshmen Louie Bishop (151) and Steven Strong (151) are tied for 52nd while senior Scott Gordon went 82-73 (155) and sits tied for 74th. Eric Restrepo is tied for 81st at 158.
Play concludes at the Windon Memorial Classic with a final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
