Aggies Finish 14th At Windon Memorial Classic

GLENVIEW, Ill. - The University of Minnesota led wire-to-wire to finish with a nine-stroke victory over UC Berkeley and Purdue following the final day of play at the 2003 Windon Memorial Classic Tuesday on the par 72, 7,058-yard North Shore Country Club.

Minnesota was the only team to finish the three-round event under par with an 859 total, 5-under par, following rounds of 283-288-288. California (868), which began the day tied for 10th, fired the low round of the tournament on Tuesday with an 11-under par, 277. The 277 was the only round in the 270's during the week and vaulted the Golden Bears up eight spots to second place, along with Purdue (868). Illinois (871) and host Northwestern (878) rounded out the top five.

UC Davis began the day in 14th place and finished in the same spot. The Aggies shot their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, firing a 9-over par, 297, to finish with a three-round score of 899.

Individually, Purdue's Peter Richardson also led from start to finish as he walked away with a five-stroke victory over a trio of players. Richardson opened the tournament with a 5-under par, 67, and never looked back as he carded rounds of 67-68-71 for a 10-under par, 206, total. Illinois' Joe Affrunti (211), Northwestern's Casey Strunk (211) and Minnesota's Justin Smith (211) all finished five strokes off the pace and in second place. Louisiana State's Heath West (213) rounded out the top five with his 3-under par, 213, performance.

UC Davis was led by senior Scott Gordon, who tied for the low round on Tuesday with a 5-under par, 67. Gordon, who went 4-under over the final two rounds, finished the tournament at 222 and in a tie for 23rd. Sophomore Brett Borchers (226) shot a 78 on Tuesday and tied for 49th while freshman Steven Strong (227) came in tied for 53rd. Another freshman, Louie Bishop, came in at 231 and tied for 73rd while junior Eric Restrepo (234) was 77th.

 

 

UC Davis will next be in action Oct. 24-25 when it competes at The Nelson Invitational hosted by Stanford University.
