UC Davis Moves Up Leaderboard And Finishes In Tie For Fifth At Cal Event

Aggies have pair of top-20 finishers

FAIRFAX, Calif. - Junior Nate Pistacchio shot a 1-under par 70 and freshman Phil Huffman had a even-par 71 on Tuesday as the UC Davis men's golf team moved up the leaderboard and finished in a tie for fifth place at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by Cal at The Meadow Club.

The Aggie duo finished among the top 20 places with Huffman, who carded a 54-hole total of 1-under 212 tying for 13th place, and Pistacchio finishing in a tie for 19th at 1-over 214. They helped spark UC Davis to a top-five finish after the Aggies moved from 12th place after the first round to eighth after the second. They tied with UC Irvine for fifth place, just four strokes behind fourth-place Fresno State.

Host California led wire-to-wire in the two-day event, carding a three-round total of 826, 26 shots under par. The Bears beat San Jose State by 16 shots with Oregon State taking third, 22 shots off the pace.

Michael Wilson of Cal took home medalist honors, posting a two-stroke victory over Stephan Stallworth of San Jose State. Wilson shot a 70 on Tuesday to go with rounds of 65 and 67 on Monday to finish at 11-under 202.

Huffman's 54-hole total was his best by 13 shots in his young Aggie career while his placing is easily his best so far this season. Huffman had an opening-round 70 to go with a pair of 71's in the final two rounds. Pistacchio continued his good start to the 2006-07 season with his second consecutive top 20 finish, highlighting this week's play with a 69 in Monday's second round. He closed the tournament with a 70 on Tuesday.

Senior Louie Bishop, who had a 4-under 67 in the second round, finished with a 75 on Tuesday and tied for 22nd at 2-over 215. Matt Marshall had a 77 and tied for 48th while freshman Kelvin Lo shot his second straight 73 and tied for 52nd.

The tournament was the final one for the Aggies before they travel south to La Quinta next week to co-host The Prestige at PGA WEST with Stanford. The 15-team tournament, played on the Greg Norman Course at PGA WEST, brings together some of the top academic and golf-playing institutions in the country. Seven teams ranked in the top 50 nationally are entered, including No. 2 USC.
