SUNRIVER, Ore - Junior Jay Westerlund fired a 1-under par, 71, to help UC Davis to a tie for fourth place following the first round of play at the Division II National Preview Golf tournament, at the par 72, 7,363-yard Crosswater Club on Monday.
The Aggies sit tied for fourth along with UC San Diego and Chico State, all at 12-over par, 300 and seven strokes off the pace of first-round leader, Cal State Stanislaus, which fired a 5-over par, 293. West Florida (297) is in second place, four strokes off the lead while Cal State, San Bernardino (298) is in third.
Individually, Chico State's J.J. Jakovac, the defending NCAA Division II champion, shot an opening-round of 4-under par, 68, to lead Westerlund and Stanislaus' Jim Schafer by three strokes. San Bernardino's David Backus and West Florida's Fredrik Lundberg sit tied for fourth after opening rounds of even-par, 72.
In addition to Westerlund, the Aggies were paced by freshman Taylor Neal, who is tied for ninth after an opening-round 74. Junior Scott Gordon is tied for 29th after a 77 on Monday while Eric Restrepo and Josh Williams are tied for 38th, 10 strokes off the lead after firing 6-over-par 78s.
Play concludes on Tuesday with 18 holes at the Crosswater Club.
