SUNRIVER, Ore. - Cal State Stanislaus fired a 3-over par, 291, in the second round to post a two-day total of 584 and capture the team title by one stroke over West Florida at the NCAA Division II National Preview at the par 72, 7,363-yard Crosswater Club on Tuesday.
UC Davis entered the final round tied for fourth before shooting a 299 to finish in a tie for fifth with Cal State, San Bernardino, at 599, 15 strokes off the lead. Chico State (594) finished in third while Cal State Bakersfield (595) was fourth.
Chico State's J.J. Jakovac captured his second straight tournament title as he fired a two-day total of 7-under par, 139, two strokes better than runner-up Jim Schafer of Cal State Stanislaus. West Florida teammates Kevin Warrick and Joe Christianson, along with San Bernardino's David Backus, tied for third at 145, six strokes off the pace of Jakovac.
Junior Jay Westerlund led UC Davis as he finished tied for 11th with a two-round score of 147. Sophomore Eric Restrepo rebounded from an opening-round 78 to shoot 1-under par, 71, on Tuesday, putting him tied for 17th at 149. Restrepo was the only Aggie player to break par on Tuesday.
This week's tournament is a preview of the 2003 NCAA Division II National Championships, which is to be played next May at the Crosswater Club. The tournament, originally scheduled for three rounds, was reduced to two following a frost delay on Monday morning.
UC Davis will next be in action on October 28-29 at the Roadrunner Invitational in Bakersfield.
