- Fueled by a spectacular 6-under 66 from Mike Brockington
and Matt Hansen's
stellar 68 on Tuesday, the UC Davis men's golf team had the best team score of the day and jumped four spots to finish second at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Sonoma Golf Club.
The Aggies, ranked No. 79 by Golfstat, posted an 11-under 277 in the final round, the best score among the 16 teams by four strokes. That stirring finish vaulted them from a sixth-place tie into sole possession of second place, ahead of ranked teams No. 21 Arizona State and No. 46 BYU which tied for fifth. UC Davis was 17 under overall.
Four-time defending and co-host Cal, ranked fourth, ran away with the team title, posting 39-under 825.
Hansen and Brockington led three UC Davis golfers in the top 20 and four in the top 30. Hansen's 2-under 68 put him fourth overall while Brockington tied with teammate Ben Corfee
for 18th. Corfee had a final-round 73, the same score as Luke Vivolo
who tied for 27th. Jonny Baxter
finished his tournament impressively with a 70, tying for 45th.
"This was the third tournament we've been in position to have a great finish and today we got it done," said head coach Cy Williams
. "This team needs all five players to step up and shoot low and Brock did that. That was the key for us. And obviously, Hansen had a strong tournament from start to finish. He was our rock."
The Aggies opened the 54-hole tournament on Monday with scores of 8-over 286 and 6-over 284 before blitzing the course on Tuesday. Brockington led the way with a spectacular 5-under 31 on the Sonoma Golf Club's back nine, posting five birdies - including three straight on the 12th through 14 holes - and collecting six on his final 10 holes. He had two birdies and just one bogey on the front nine.
Brockington's career-best score eclipsed the 68 he had at the 2012 WInchester Classic. He finished 2-under 214 overall.
Hansen posted his highest finish of the season, carding seven birdies and playing each side of the course two shots under par. It was the second time in the tournament he had a 68, and combined with his second-round 70, left him 10 under overall. Hansen tied for fourth with second-ranked Brandon Hagy of Cal.
Corfee started his day well, covering the opening nine holes with eight pars and a birdie. He was 2 over on the back, posted a 73 and was 2 under for the tournament. Vivolo tied Corfee's 73 after playing his last nine holes 1 under. He was even for the week.
Baxter, who was 5 over entering the day, turned the tables with his strong 2-under 70. He was even at the turn and then posted birdies on the par-5 13th and the par-5 16th, along with seven pars. He was 3 over overall.
"It was a very strong field," said Williams. "I almost feel like we won the tournament given how far ahead Cal was. We beat a ton of really strong BCS schools. People say that's the best athletics around but we were better than all of them - except one (Cal)," said Williams. "Now we've got to get back to work and get ready for the next tournament."
Joel Stalter of Cal finished 13 under and won by a shot over David Fink of Oregon State. The Bears' Pace Johnson took third at 11 under.
UC Davis will finish the fall portion of the 2013-14 season when it travels to the Pacific Invitational in Stockton from Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
