FAIRFAX, Calif. - Matt Seramin opened with a 69, then Matt Hansen followed with a second-round 67 and the UC Davis men's golf team, ranked 33rd nationally, is in ninth place after the first day of action at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
Host and top-ranked Cal sits atop the leaderboard at an impressive 35-under 533. San Francisco trails by nine strokes and is in second at 26-under 542.
After Cal and San Francisco, the third place and tenth place teams are separated by just five strokes. Four teams are tied for third at nine-under 559, including No. 24 San Diego State, while Fresno State, Oregon State, UC Davis and Colorado are each separated by only one stroke.
Hansen is tied for 17th at 3-under 139 after posting a five-stroke improvement between his first and second rounds. He opened with a 72 in round one, then came back in round two with a season-low 67 to jump from 47th and into a tie for 17th place.
He was at two over through five holes, then settled with five straight pars. He birdied on the par-5 15th hole, setting off a string of five birdies over his final seven holes. He followed hole 15 with back-to-back birdies to get down to one under, parred the 18th, then birdied the next three straight holes to reach four under. He closed his second round with a par on the par-4 fourth hole.
Seramin is tied for 24th after a consistent day that started with a 2-under 69, a season-low for the Aggie junior. He opened with a birdie on his first hole of the day, the par-3 eighth, but then fell to one over after carding three bogies over the next six holes. He regrouped with a par on the 15th hole, then birdied on hole 16 to get back to even.
He closed out his first round in strong fashion, getting to two under after consecutive birdies on holes one and two then holding there with five straight pars to finish at 2-under 69.
Jonny Baxter is tied for 32nd at 1-under 141 after posting first and second round scores of 71 and 70, respectively, while Tyler Raber is tied for 38th at one over. Mike Brockington is tied for 75th.
