STANFORD, Calif. - Duke University fired a 6-under par, 278, and holds a one stroke lead over a trio of schools following the first day of play at the 2003 Nelson Invitational, played Friday on the par 71, 6,786-yard Stanford Golf Course.
Helped by three players who finished under par, including Ryan Blaum who is tied for second following the first round, the Blue Devils hold a one-stroke edge over Colorado (279), Kansas (279) and Washington (279). Southern California rounds out the top five and sits two strokes off the lead after a 4-under par, 280 on Friday. UC Davis is tied for 13th after an opening round of 293.
Individually, Toledo's Brad Heaven led the way as he fired a 7-under par, 64, to take a two-stroke lead over Blaum heading into Saturday's second round. Heaven's round included a 31 on the back nine. Blaum shot 31-35 on Friday and sits in second place while a quartet of players, including Colorado State's Nolan Martin, Kansas' Andrew Price, Duke's Tom Lefebvre and Colorado's Edward McGlasson are three strokes off the lead after shooting 4-under par, 67s.
UC Davis was led by junior Eric Restrepo who shot an opening round of even-par, 71. Senior Scott Gordon is one stroke back after a 72 on Friday while sophomore Brett Borchers and freshman Louie Bishop both went 4-over par, 75, on Friday. Senior Chris Kilkenny was the fifth Aggie to compete, shooting a 5-over par, 76, in the opening round.
"It was a tough first day for us," said UC Davis head coach Cy Williams. "We have the ability to go lower and I would expect us to come out Saturday morning and shoot a much better score."
Play continues at The Nelson with 18 holes on Saturday and a final 18 holes on Sunday.
