STOCKTON, Calif. - Matt Hansen carded five birdies during his 3-under 68 and three other Aggies are in the top 20 as the UC Davis men's golf team ended the first round of the SCVB Pacific Invitational at Stockton Country Club on Thursday tied for second.
Hansen is tied for second among the players after his impressive opening round while Ben Corfee, Mike Brockington and Luke Vivolo each shot 72s and are tied for 18th. Jonny Baxter was only one shot back of his three teammates after his first-round 73 and is tied for 30th.
The Aggies shot an even-par 284 on Thursday and trail No. 45 BYU by just seven shots with two rounds yet to be played. UC Davis, which is ranked 50th by Golfweek and 61st by Golfstat, is tied for second with Santa Clara and Charlotte. Nevada (286) rounds out the top five.
Hansen wasted no time getting into red numbers during his round, picking up a birdie on the par-4 10th, his first hole of the day. He added birdies on the 15th, 18th, second and third holes to counter just two bogeys as he came in with his season-best tying 68.
Corfee had two birdies, both of them on his back nine in which he shot 1 under, to help highlight his day. Brockington had birdies on the 14th and 16th holes to move to 2 under early in his round and then added another later. Vivolo had back-to-back birdies on the 16th and 17th holes and had three overall.
Baxter also had three birdies including consecutive ones to start his back nine.
Joe Parkinson of BYU shot a 6-under 65 to hold the first-day lead. Hansen is tied with Daniel Chian of Long Beach State and BYU's Justin Kelley.
Second-round action starts at 8 a.m. on Friday. The Aggies will play with Kansas State and Charlotte.
