STOCKTON, Calif. - Ben Corfee blitzed the back nine of Stockton Country Club for five birdies - and had six overall - as the Aggie sophomore shot a 3-under 68 Friday to pace the third-place UC Davis men's golf team during the second round of action at the SCVB Pacific Invitational.
Corfee jumped into a tie for 10th after his strong play. Senior Matt Hansen put together his second straight impressive round, shooting a 69 to move into fifth place in the player standings. Luke Vivolo carded a 71 and is tied for 23rd while Mike Brockington and Jonny Baxter each had 73s and are tied for 29th and 38th, respectively.
The Aggies had a three-stroke improvement from their opening-round play on Thursday, firing a 3-under 281 to move to 3-under 565 overall. UC Davis, ranked a season-best 50th by Golfweek and 61st by Golfstat, is in third behind leader BYU (546) and second-place Saint Mary's (565). The Aggies hold a one-shot over Santa Clara (566) which is in fourth place.
Corfee, from Davis, was 3 over after eight holes on Friday but then turned it on over the final 10 holes of the round. He birdied the par-4 ninth hole and then had birdies on the 12th and 14th holes before ending his day with three straight. His 3-under round moved him to 2 under overall.
Hansen, ranked 70th by Golfstat, continued his stellar play with another solid round. He was even at his turn but then had three birdies over the next seven holes to steamroll his way to a 69. Hansen is 5 under for the tournament and trails second-place Justin Kelley of BYU by just two shots. BYU's Joe Parkinson is 12 under after two rounds for a five-shot lead.
Vivolo is 1 over after the second round, picking up three birdies on the back nine. He played the final nine holes a shot under par to come in with his 71. Brockington played the back nine even on his way to 73, carding four birdies overall. Baxter matched that score with the help of two birdies including on the par-5 16th.
The Aggies will play the final round of the tournament - as well as the fall portion of their 2013-14 season - when they tee off beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday. UC Davis will play with BYU and Saint Mary's.
