LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - UC Davis junior Matt Hansen enjoyed three solid rounds, including an even-par 70 in the first round, and finished tied for 16th at the 2012 Patriot All-America Invitational on Monday, a special tournament that honored the country's fallen soldiers while spotlighting some of collegiate golf's top players.

Hansen, twice honored on All-Big West Conference teams and a 2011 PING All-America honorable mention, finished 5-over 215 in the three-day event at The Wigwam Gold Course. He followed his opening-round 70 with a 72 on Sunday and a 73 the final day. He finished with six birdies overall, two each day.

Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas captured medalist honors in the tournament, finishing 4 under with impressive rounds of 68 on both the first and last days. UNLV's Kevin Penner finished a shot off the pace in second place. Only seven golfers in the 82-player field finished below par. Hansen, who was invited to the prestigious tournament for the second straight year, tied with Harrison Shih of Columbia.

The tournament field was selected by the Golf Coaches Association of America and featured elite players from NCAA Divisions I, II and III along with the NAIA, and NJCAA Divisions I and II.

Besides featuring some of the best golfers in the country, the 2012 Patriot All-America also recognized fallen soldiers from each player's home state. The players used golf bags embroidered with a soldier's name, with the bags provided to each school so that they can be auctioned at later time. Proceeds will benefit the Fields of Honor charity. Hansen represented Staff Sgt. David Gutierrez of San Francisco who died on Christmas Day in 2009 in Afghanistan. He was also a veteran of two tours in Iraq.

Hansen will now get ready for the start of the spring season for UC Davis, which begins at the 23rd Annual Ameri-Ari in Hawaii in early February.
