DAVIS, Calif. – Less than a week after wrapping up action at the 18th Prestige at PGA WEST, UC Davis men’s golf heads back to Southern California for Pepperdine’s Southwestern Invitational, held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village on Monday and Tuesday.

Originally founded by USC, the Southwestern later become a co-hosted event for two years, then was discontinued in 2015. After that one-year absence, Pepperdine revived the tournament in 2016. Past champions have included UCLA’s Corey Pavin (1978, 1981), Arizona State’s Paul Casey (1998) and Stanford’s Tiger Woods (1996).

Based on the team’s performance in Palm Springs earlier this week, UC Davis head coach Cy Williams has retooled his lineup for the trip to the Conejo Valley. Senior Brandon Baumgarten finished t7th at the Prestige while junior transfer Tanner Hughes placed t21st, both as individual participants. Had their respective scores of 141 and 145 counted toward the team total, the Aggies would have finished sixth at the tough Prestige tournament.

Overall, Williams will field a lineup of Baumgarten, Hughes, freshman Thomas Hutchison, senior Ryan Han and sophomore Matt Robinson. Hutchison fired rounds of 1-over 72 and even-par 71 to place in a tie for 10th at The Prestige, tops among the team’s scorers. He also has enjoyed the team’s low score in four of the last six rounds, including a season-best 7-under-par 65 at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate.

Robinson has averaged 73.57 in 14 rounds this season, second only to Hutchison (72.86) among the four Aggies who have played every tournament. Han earned a spot in the lineup to start the spring season, shooting 3-over 219 during the Amer Ari.

UC Davis enters a field of 15 teams, including No. 23 host Pepperdine and No. 24 UCLA. The Waves’ Sahith Theegala, who won last year’s medalist at the Southwestern, sits eighth nationally according to Golfweek’s Sagarin rankings.

The tournament consists of 36 holes on Monday followed by an 18-hole final round on Tuesday, all of which is held on the club’s Lakes & Oaks course. Live results will be available via Golfstat (link above).
