SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The UC Davis men's golf team, ranked 65th by Golfstat, heads to the Wyoming Cowboy Classic this week at Talking Stick Golf Club looking for the same success it enjoyed when it won the event three years in a row from 2007-09.
A large field of 20 teams will open play on Monday with a shotgun start at 7:30 a.m. at Talking Stick's North Course, which will measure 7,133 yards and play to a par 70 for the 54-hole tournament. The teams will play two rounds on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
Hansen is hoping to carry the momentum from his final-round, 5-under 65 last Sunday into this week's event. His strong finish lifted him into a tie for 20th place. Vivolo was just 3 over at The Goodwin, shooting a 70 in the last round. He tied for 28th.
The Aggies will be trying to win the tournament for the fourth time. UC Davis' three wins are the most in the Cowboy Classic's 11-year history. Former standouts Louie Bishop (2007) and Austin Graham (2009) earned medalist honors for the Aggies during that run. The Aggies' 15-under 825 score in the 2009 stands as a tournament record.
UC Davis was fourth in 2011 and 10th in 2012 during its two most recent appearances.
A trio of teams - No. 11 Oklahoma, No. 39 BYU and No. 52 Colorado - are ranked in Golfstat's top 60 while five are among the top 10.
Other teams entered UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Gonzaga, Idaho, Kansas State, Old Dominion, Santa Clara, Southern Utah, Utah, Utah State, UTEP, UT-Pan American, UTSA, Weber State and host Wyoming.
