DAVIS, Calif. - For the second straight week, UC Davis men's golf competes in two tournaments in two different states. During Spring Break, the Aggies took part in Oregon's Duck Invitational then enjoyed a strong finish with a 2-over-par 282 team score in the final round of Stanford's Goodwin tournament.
This time around, UC Davis heads to Chandler, Arizona, to take part in the Wyoming-hosted Cowboy Classic on Monday and Tuesday; then returns home to play in its own backyard with the 14-team El Macero Classic on Thursday and Friday.
Saturday's third round at Stanford wrapped up a solid March for junior Evan Knight, who compiled a 221 in Eugene then a 218 in Stanford for a stroke average of 73.17. Senior Ben Corfee, who leads the Aggies in that category at 73.13, had the team's best tourney at the Duck Invite with a 6-over 219 total.
Head coach Cy Williams will field the same lineup that he brought to Oregon: Corfee, Knight, junior Brandon Baumgarten, freshman Matt Robinson and junior Jeremy Sanchez. Robinson ranks third on the Aggies with a 74.57 average with five rounds of par or better this season. Baumgarten, the only Aggie besides Corfee to have played in all eight tournaments in 2016-17, sits fourth on the team at 74.67. Sanchez came on strong at the end of the Oregon tourney, carding a team low round of even-par 71 on the final day.
The El Macero Classic marks the team's second home tournament of the year, although the only one actually located within the 530 area code -- the Stanford co-hosted Prestige at PGA WEST takes place more than 500 miles south in La Quinta. UC Davis has two of its fellow Big West Conference members in the field, namely Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside, plus local rival Sacramento State. The tourney also features Fairleigh Dickinson, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Idaho, co-host Nevada, Northern Colorado, Oregon State, Seattle, Utah Valley and Washington State.
The El Macero Classic serves as the last competition prior to the Big West Championship, hosted by UC Santa Barbara from May 1-3. El Macero Country Club is UC Davis' primary home course, and the site of the team's John & Diane Watson Short Game Training Center.
