IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis senior Matt Hansen was named to the All-Big West Men's Golf first team while sophomore Ben Corfee received second-team recognition, it was announced by the league on Wednesday.
Hansen, from Los Osos, Calif., is on the All-Big West team for the fourth consecutive year. He was a second-team honoree the previous three years. Corfee, who hails from Davis, picked up his first All-Big West award.
Both players are enjoying outstanding seasons for the Aggies who are currently preparing for the NCAA Auburn Regional next week in Auburn, Ala., after receiving the program's first-ever at-large selection on Monday.
Hansen currently leads the Aggies with a 70.2 scoring average while posting five top-five finishes during the 2013-14 season, including first-place showings in each of his last two tournaments - the El Macero Classic and the Big West Championship. He also has a second-place performance at the Bandon Dunes Championship and a tie for second at the SCVB Pacific Invitational during the fall
Hansen's 65 at The Goodwin at Stanford is the team's low round this season while his 24 rounds at par or better are also best on the team. Besides winning his last two tournaments, he's also posted at least one round in the 60s in nine straight tournaments including the Big West Championship where he went 69-67 to win by five strokes at 8 under.
Besides his three All-Big West second-team honors, Hansen was also the Big West Freshman of the Year, a PING All-America honorable mention and the NCAA Southwest Regional medalist in 2011.
Corfee is second on the team with a 72.6 scoring average and has finished in the top 20 three times. He had back-to-back top-20 showings in the fall when he tied for 18th at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational at Cal and followed with a tie for eighth at the SCVB Pacific Invitational after closing the event with a pair of 3-under 68s. Corfee was a combined 7 under for those two tournaments.
He's highlighted his spring with a tie for 15th among 84 players at the Bandon Dunes Championship and has posted four rounds in the 60s. He had two of them at The Prestige at PGA WEST which was played on the tough Greg Norman Course.
Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano was named the Big West Player of the Year while the Titans' Jason Drotter earned Coach of the Year accolades. Justin De Los Santos of Cal Poly was named the Freshman of the Year.
