DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's golf team returns to the postseason for the second straight year as the 13th-seeded Aggies open play at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional May 17-19 at the Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
UC Davis earned its third team bid after repeating as Big West Conference champions on May 1 as the Aggies held off Long Beach State to claim the team title by one stroke. It marks the third team trip to a regional as UC Davis also advanced in 2009, the Aggies' second year at the Div. I level, and 2011. Additionally, Austin Graham earned an individual selection to the 2010 NCAA Regional, tying for 40th overall.
Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on one of the participating teams will take part in the 54-hole regional, hosted by Stanford, with 18 holes of stroke play on each day of competition. The top five teams and one individual will advance to the 115th NCAA Championships May 29-June 3 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
The regional field is highlighted by top-seeded Cal, which ranks second nationally, ninth-ranked Stanford and No. 14 San Diego State. No. 22 UCF and No. 25 LSU round out the five top-25 teams assigned to the regional.
Head coach Cy Williams will use the same lineup that helped the Aggies win their second consecutive Big West title. Sophomores Matt Seramin, who tied for fourth at the conference championship, and Matt Hansen, who is playing in his second straight regional, will be joined by sophomore Jonny Baxter and freshmen Luke Vivolo and Mike Brockington.
Seramin three-under finish at the Big West Championships earned him All-Big West Conference honorable mention recognition, marking the first postseason recognition of his Aggie career. Seramin opened with a 73 before shooting back-to-back rounds of 70 to tie for fourth overall. He is averaging a 73.1 stroke per round average.
Hansen received All-Big West Conference second team accolades after tying for 16th overall at the Big West Championships. The sophomore opened the season with a 21st-place finish at The Prestige at PGA WEST, shooting a 4-under 212, before tying for ninth overall at the SCVB Pacific Invitational. He owns a 72.1 stroke per round average.
Brockington's debut season was highlighted by back-to-back top-10 finishes to close out the season. At the Winchester Classic Apr. 20-22, he finished fourth overall, closing out the tournament with a season-low 68. He tied for sixth overall at the Big West Championships, finishing at 2-under 214 after carding consecutive 70s in the second and third rounds.
Baxter opened the Big West Championships with first and second round scores of 71 and 70, respectively, to finish 13th overall as all five Aggie competitors finished in the top-20. Vivolo tied for 16th at 3-over for his highest finish of the year.
UC Davis will tee off from hole one starting at 9:50 a.m. The tee times are set in 11-minute intervals.
