CHERRY HILLS VILLAGE, Colo. - Tyler Raber shot a 2-under 68 at the CommonGround Golf Course to tie for 20th while Matt Hansen's 75 on the Cherry Hills Country Club course rounded out the first day of action for the two UC Davis men's golfer at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Raber's first round featured 14 pars, eight of which came on the front nine, while a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole put him at one under as he entered the back nine.
He remained at one under with four straight pars, then dropped to even with a bogey, his only one of the day, on the par-3 14th hole. Consecutive pars on holes 15 and 16 kept him even before back-to-back birdies moved him to two under.
After carding a seven on the very first hole of the day, Hansen rebounded with back-to-back birdies and parred on four of the remaining holes of his front nine to turn the corner at three over.
The junior-to-be shot a solid back nine, parring eight straight holes until a birdie his final hole of the day moved him to 4-over 75.
Hansen, who is playing in his fourth straight U.S. Amateur Championship, will tee off first on the second and final day of stroke play competition and is slated for 6:50 a.m. (Pacific) start time at CommonGround. Raber will tee off at 1:15 p.m. (Pacific) at Cherry Hills Country Club.
The top 64 finishers will advance to the match play portion of the tournament which begins on Wednesday.
