Men's golf heads to Marquette Intercollegiate

Sept. 26, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. - After a weekend bye from competition, UC Davis men’s golf returns to action in back-to-back October tournaments, beginning with the three-day 15-team Marquette Invitational, held at fabled Erin Hills from Sunday through Tuesday.

UC Davis joins eight teams ranked in Golfweek’s September 21 Top 25 – No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 5 Marquette, No. 19 South Florida, No. 24 Wisconsin, No. 26 Florida State, No. 29 Iowa State, No. 36 Michigan State and No. 47 UTEP – on the very course that hosted the 117th U.S. Open back in June. Augusta, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Ole Miss, Purdue and UCLA completes the tough field.

The Aggies previously finished ninth in the 12-team Rod Myers Invitational back on September 16-17. Senior Evan Knight led the UC Davis crew with a 1-over-par 217 total, including a low round of 70 on the final day. The managerial economics major and 2017 All-Big West Conference honorable mention will again top the lineup for the weekend in the Badger State.

Sophomore Matt Robinson, junior Jesse Bratz and freshman Thomas Hutchison will also return to the lineup at Marquette. Robinson tied for 29th at the Myers Invite, firing a 2-under 70 in the second round. Bratz and Hutchison each shared 50th place with 224 totals at the Duke University course.

Returning to the lineup is senior Brandon Baumgarten, the lone 2017-18 returnee who played in all 11 tournaments last year. Another managerial economics major, Baumgarten finished third on the team with a 74.15 average as a junior. He also highlighted his offseason by making second alternate for the U.S. Amateur, a tourney that featured Aggies Ben Corfee and Knight.

This is the fourth running of the Marquette Intercollegiate, and the third at Erin Hills, which Golf Digest rated No. 9 on its list of U.S. public courses. Eleven of the competing teams reached NCAA regional play in 2017, with Florida State, Iowa State, Ole Miss and Purdue reaching the NCAA finals. Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry won the individual national championship last spring.

UC Davis will have a short week following the Marquette Intercollegiate, heading to Northwestern’s Windon Memorial Classic from October 8-9. That will wrap up the Aggies’ three-tournament fall slate.

THE DANCE FLOOR: Erin Hills GC took a year off from hosting the Marquette Intercollegiate in preparation for the U.S. Open in June... Two Aggies have posted under-par rounds: Evan Knight shot a 71 and 70 in the second and third rounds, respectively, at the Rod Myers Invite... Matt Robinson fired a 2-under 70 in the second round... Brandon Baumgarten’s younger brother, Bryan, is a sophomore at Illinois... The two have not yet met as collegians, as UC Davis and Illinois had no coinciding tournaments in 2016-17 or in the fall of 2017... Speaking of siblings, Thomas and Samantha Hutchison will nearly cross each other in the skies between California and Illinois... Samantha, a junior on the Aggie women’s team, will compete at Northwestern’s Windy City Classic days before the men head to Evanston for the Windon Memorial...
