SONOMA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's golf team returns to competition on Monday and Tuesday when the No. 79 Aggies face nine other top-100 teams at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, hosted by fourth-ranked Cal at Sonoma Golf Club.
The Aggies are coming off a seventh-place performance at Northwestern's Windon Memorial Invitational in September and will be playing the third of four fall tournaments on the 2013-14 schedule.
Matt Hansen, Jonny Baxter, Ben Corfee, Mike Brockington and Luke Vivolo will comprise UC Davis' team at this week's event. The Aggies, who will play with Hawai'i, No. 55 Oregon and Pepperdine on Monday, will play 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. The 54-hole tournament finishes on Tuesday.
Sixteen teams are entered in the tournament including No. 21 Arizona State, No. 46 BYU, No. 54 Oregon State, No. 56 Minnesota, No. 65 Fresno State, No. 66 San Diego State and No. 94 Colorado. Also participating are Colorado State, Hawai'i, Pepperdine, San Francisco, San Jose State and Santa Clara.
This is the fourth straight year the Aggies will be playing in Cal's tournament. They finished ninth last season but were as high as fourth in 2010. The Golden Bears are four-time defending champions of their own tournament although they shared the 2011 title with Oregon.
Hansen leads UC Davis in early season scoring, posting a 72.0 average. Baxter (73.3), Vivolo (74.5), Corfee (75.0) and Brockington (75.2) are also off to solid starts for the Aggies who were 10th at the Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational at Washington in mid-September before posting a top-10 finish at Northwestern.
UC Davis will wind up the fall season with the Pacific Invitational beginning Oct. 31.
