DAVIS, Calif. - Ramon Martin Del Campo put away the Aggies' only goal of the game while Kris Schultz came up with three saves as the UC Davis men's soccer team fought Chico State to a 1-1 exhibition draw on Saturday at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis.
The Wildcats struck first in the double overtime draw when Tyson Crim's header off a cross from Micah Miranda found the upper left corner of the goal to give Chico State a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute.
UC Davis nearly had the equalizer in the 38th minute when the Aggies were awarded a direct free kick outside of the 18-yard box after Wildcat goalkeeper Sam Evans handled the ball outside of the penalty area. Elliott Hord took a low, hard shot, but Evans was there for the save and the subsequent rebound effort by Matt Sheldon went just wide of the post.
Martin del Campo tied it up just 10 minutes into the second half. Matt Wiesenfarth sent a through pass to Ryan Gross who one-touched a cross into the box. Martin del Campo was trailing and one-touched the cross from Gross into the lower left corner of the goal.
In the 78th minute, the Wildcats almost scored the go ahead goal, but Kirk Kappelhoff came up with a huge save for UC Davis. Octavio Guzman sent a corner kick into the penalty area, finding Tyson Crim, but Crim's attempt was wide and cleared out by an Aggie defender. The clearance went to Jake Ward, but his shot was headed away by Kappelhoff who was standing just inside of the post, preventing a goal.
As the first overtime period came to an end, Alex Aguiar fired a shot from 25 yards out and nearly found the upper right corner, but Evans knocked it up and over the crossbar and out of play. On the ensuing corner kick, Martin del Campo's header was high and the teams headed to a second overtime period.
Chico State was awarded a free kick in the 107th minute of action and Guzman sent a long high cross into the box, but Schultz came out and tipped the ball over the crossbar as the team's closed out with the 1-1 draw.
UC Davis opens the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 24 as the Aggies take on UNLV at 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
