DALLAS -- UC Davis sophomore Luke Hazel and junior Matt Baringer each came off the bench to score second-half goals and erase an first-half deficit, but host SMU scored twice in the final five minutes of regulation to sneak away with a 3-2 win over the Aggies in the regular season opener for both teams on Friday night at Westcott Field in Dallas.

Chasing a goal to start of the second half, Hazel brought his team level in the 60th minute -- an unassisted strike for his first career goal -- while Baringer, fresh off a two-goal performance in the exhibition against Chico State last weekend, put UC Davis in front three minutes later, netting his third career goal in the 63rd minute -- another unassisted score -- for a 2-1 advantage.

The Mustangs equalized in the 86th minute after the Aggies were whistled for a foul in the box, as Mauro Cichero slotted home the ensuing penalty kick for his second goal of the night. Just over two minutes later, his header on a counterattack off a pass from teammate Jared Rice completed the hat trick and gave SMU the final 3-2 advantage.

Both teams were off the mark in the first 45 minutes, combining for 13 shots, but putting only two of those on frame -- one of which was Cichero's free kick from 25 yards out that found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore goalkeeper Wallis Lapsley stopped one shot in the first and two more in the second to round out his night in net, while Michael Nelson went without a save at the other end of the field.

Baringer and teammate Noah Wilson each finished with three shots to pace UC Davis, which took 12 shots on the night, but put only two on frame. The Aggies' rhythm was stymied, however, whistled for 22 fouls against only five for the home side on the night.

Flying home on Saturday, UC Davis returns to the field on Monday evening (Aug. 28) at 5 p.m., welcoming San Francisco to the Aggie Soccer Field in the team's home opener.
