MORAGA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team held Saint Mary's scoreless until the 66th minute, but could not recover after the Gaels scored, edging the Aggies by a 1-0 decision in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga.

Midway through the second half, Patrick Watson's long throw found Trevor Newquist inside the box, who touched the ball in to Justin Howard. Howard's header into the back of the net gave Saint Mary's the 1-0 advantage which they would not relinquish.

The first half remained even throughout with UC Davis taking four shots to the seven put up by Saint Mary's.

In the 26th minute, Matt Sheldon forced Gael goalkeeper Doug Herrick to save his shot from inside the box and a few seconds later Kevin Schulte's attempt was blocked.

As the second half got underway, Matt Wiesenfarth's shot from the left side was saved by Herrick as was Alex Henry's attempt from the far left wing in the 57th minute.

John Joslin led the Aggies offensively with two shots, one of which was on frame, while seven others made attempts.

Goalkeeper Omar Zeenni recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action.

UC Davis begins a four-game homestand on Friday when the Aggies host Seattle at 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Stadium.
