BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Omar Zeenni made three saves in his second straight shutout while the UC Davis men's soccer team combined for 11 shots, but the Aggies would settle to a 0-0 draw against CSU Bakersfield on Monday at Main Field in Bakersfield.
UC Davis moves to 1-0-1 while CSU Bakersfield, playing in its season opener, now stands at 0-0-1.
Five different Aggies posted two shots apiece, but just two of UC Davis' 11 shots were on frame. CSU Bakersfield was led by Gyasi Zardes' six attempts while Lucas Dall'Orso took five shots.
Just a few minutes later, Kory Kindle's header was cleared out by a UC Davis defender and Dall'Oros's follow up was blocked. The Roadrunners won a corner kick, but shots from both Dall'Orso and Zardes were off target.
In the second half, UC Davis suddenly found themselves at an advantage after Jesus Sanchez picked up his second yellow card of the game and was ejected with 25:10 left to play in the period. Despite an extra man on the field, however, the Aggies could not find the back of the net. Wiesenfarth saw a shot blocked in the 67th minute while freshman Eric Budniewski likewise was blocked in the 74th minute.
The teams headed into the first overtime period scoreless, but Matt Sheldon nearly gave UC Davis the victory just 48 seconds into play. His header, however, hit the goalpost.
A header from Alex Aguiar in the 97th minute was saved by Roadrunner goalkeeper Eric Shannon who tallied two saves on the night.
UC Davis put up another three shots in the second overtime period, but the game would end in a scoreless draw.
The Aggies continue a four-game road trip on Friday at Air Force. Kick off is set for 6 p.m.
