DAVIS, Calif. -
UC Davis seniors Quincy Amarikwa and Dylan Curtis helped break 58 minutes of scoreless soccer with a combined three goals and two assists in under three minutes of play to lead the 30th-ranked Aggies to a season-opening 3-1 victory over Long Island during the first game of the Copa de Causeway at Aggie Soccer Stadium Friday night.
It was the season opener for both teams and the opening game of the Copa de Causeway tournament, which is being co-hosted by Sacramento State. The Aggies enter the season ranked 30th in the College Soccer News preseason poll.
The Aggies held a 9-1 shot advantage and took seven corner kicks in the first half, but failed to find the back of the net. Amarikwa ended the scoring drought in the 59th minute as he headed in a cross from Curtis to put the Aggies on top. Curtis struck again under two minutes later as he dribbled through the Blackbird defense to make the score 2-0.
The offensive onslaught by the Aggies continued just 41 seconds later as Curtis hit Amarikwa again for the third goal of the contest.
Long Island ended the Aggies' bid for a shutout in the 78th minute as Steve Jakubowski headed in a corner kick from Ryan Vignona to make the final score 3-1.
UC Davis held a substantial shot advantage over Long Island at 23-3 and managed 10 corner kicks to the Blackbirds' three.
The Blackbirds missed a chance to take a 1-0 lead early in the game as Aggie goalkeeper Ryan McCowan knocked the ball down to keep the game scoreless. McCowan played all 90 minutes in goal for the Aggies to earn the win while Michael Wood got the loss for Long Island. Adam Janssen played the final 18 minutes for the Blackbirds and made one save in the process.
The Aggies conclude the Copa de Causeway Sunday by hosting former NCAA Division II and CCAA rival Cal State Bakersfield at noon.
