Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. - Sophomore Ryan Shaw's goal in the 68th minute capped a second-half Aggie comeback as the 11th-ranked UC Davis Aggies rallied to defeat Humboldt State, 3-2, on the final day of the 2002 Roadrunner Soccer Classic Sunday afternoon in Bakersfield.

With the win the Aggies improve to 2-0 on the season while Humboldt State drops to 0-2.

Shaw, who scored the Aggies' lone goal Friday in a 1-0 win over Seattle, put UC Davis on top early as he headed in a Vinney Matteoli cross from the far post in the 22nd minute. Humboldt would answer in the 33rd minute as Masun Denison headed home Luke Scott's corner, tying the game at 1-1. It proved to be one of Humboldt's few scoring opportunity of the period.

Following the intermission, Humboldt came out the stronger side and took the lead in less than two minutes thanks to some aggressive work in the box by Geoff Scott, who followed his own rebound for the goal. The Lumberjacks controlled the tempo from that point until Aggie senior Jesse Swonetz created a weird deflection which somehow found its way to the back of the HSU net in the 59th minute.

The teams played an even match from that point, with Shaw providing the winning margin in the 68th minute. He took a short pass from Peter Barrick near midfield and made a long run which he finished by tucking a left-footer inside the near post for what proved to be the match winner. It marked his second goal of the contest and third in two games this season.

For the game, UC Davis outshot the Lumberjacks by a margin of 14-7, and held a commanding 9-1 edge in corner kicks. Aggie goalkeeper Nic Platter recorded two saves on the afternoon.

UC Davis will next be in action on Thursday when it hosts Dominican College in the Aggies home opener at Aggie Field. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.
