SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -
Juniors Keith Gilbert and Vinney Matteoli each scored goals and the Aggie defense did the rest as UC Davis earned its first victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout over San Francisco State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Aggies move to 1-1-2 on the season, 1-1 in CCAA play while the Gators fall to 2-4 overall, 0-2 in conference action.
UC Davis dominated the contest and it was apparent in the first half as the Aggies outshot the Gators, 7-2, in the opening 45 minutes. Gilbert opened the scoring in the 30th minute with his first goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, Aggie forward Ryan Shaw got behind the Gator defense before being pulled down inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Matteoli wasted no time in stepping up and beating Gator keeper Gabriel Hall to give the Aggies their final margin of victory.
UC Davis ended the contest by outshooting the Gators, 12-3, as Aggie goalkeeper Nic Platter was rarely tested, making two saves on the game. Freshman Charles Warne saw the first action of his collegiate career, playing the final nine minutes.
UC Davis will next be in action on Tuesday when it continues CCAA play with a 7pm matchup at Chico State.
