BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Alfredo Chavez' free kick just minutes before the first half ended proved to be the difference as Cal State Bakersfield upset the No.24 UC Davis Aggies, 3-0, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game Sunday afternoon on the CSUB Main Soccer Field.
With the loss, the Aggies fall to 6-2-1, 2-2 in CCAA play while the Roadrunners improve to 6-2, 4-1 in conference action.
The Aggies came out strong as they continually applied pressure against the Bakersfield defense. Despite controlling the match for much of the opening half, UC Davis couldn't get on the board, as the Roadrunners escaped more than a few close calls. But just before the half ended, Bakersfield capitalized on one of its few first-half scoring opportunities thanks to an Aggie foul deep in its end. Chavez sent the ensuing free kick towards the box and a strange deflection gave Aggie goalkeeper Nic Platter little chance as the Roadrunners took the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Battling heat in the triple digit range, the second half was a test of attrition. Roadrunner forward Joey Mejias gave Bakersfield an insurance goal by running on to a short through ball from Kyle Lundy and slipping his fourth goal of the season by Platter in the 68th minute. Bakersfield would add one final goal in the 71st minute to close out the scoring.
For the game, Bakersfield outshot UC Davis, 15-12, and also held the edge in corner kicks, 5-3. Platter finished the game with four saves while Bakersfield keeper, Josh Wicks, recorded seven.
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday, September 29, when it hosts San Francisco State in a CCAA game at Aggie Field beginning at 1:30 p.m.
