DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team outshot Saint Mary's 15-7 and won six corner kicks, but the Gaels scored once in each half to claim a 2-0 victory on Saturday at Aggie Soccer Field.

UC Davis moves to 2-3-4 as the Aggies close out nonconference play. Saint Mary's improves to 4-1-2 on the year.

The Aggies put up 11 shots in the first half, including five in the first 25 minutes of the game, but were unable to find the back of the net. A Pat Reese header off a corner kick by Alex Henry in just the second minute was wide while a second attempt by Reese was blocked by another player.

Saint Mary's took a 1-0 lead at the 26:25 mark after Gerardo Mendoza scored for the Gaels. Jake Stenberg lined up a free kick from inside Saint Mary's offensive half and the kick fell inside the penalty area. After a scramble, Mendoza put away a shot to give the Gaels the lead.

Reese nearly tied the game in the 33rd minute, but Gael goalkeeper Andre Rawls came up with his first of six saves. Ryan Gross made a run down the left sideline, then crossed the ball in along the ground. Reese ran onto it, sliding inside the penalty area to make contact, but Rawls snatched it before the Aggie junior could attempt a shot.

With nine minutes left in the half, Gross found Brian Ford streaking down the right sideline. Ford carried the ball to the end line before whipping in a cross that Rawls punched away.

A long throw in from Gross in the 39th minute found Blake Steele in the six-yard box, but Steele's header was wide as the Gaels took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

Saint Mary's tacked on a second goal in the 53rd minute of play after Tariq Adam found the back of the net on an assist from Ismail Adam. Ismail's through pass found Tariq along the left sideline and Tariq's shot across the goal landed into the far right corner of the net to put Saint Mary's up 2-0.

Late in the game, UC Davis nearly scored again after Matt Wiesenfarth's through ball in the middle of the field found Reese, who moved around a defender to one-touch a shot onto goal. His attempt was smothered by Rawls, however.

Reese led the Aggies with four shots, two of which were on goal, while Eric Budniewski had three shots.

UC Davis held Saint Mary's to just seven total shots and did not give up a corner kick to the Gaels.

The Aggies open Big West Conference play on the road, traveling to face Cal State Northridge on Sept. 28.
