DAVIS, Calif. - Casey Bernard scored midway through the second overtime on Friday night, capping a game in which both teams scored goals in the final seven minutes of regulation, as the Sacramento State men's soccer team downed host UC Davis 3-2 in a nonconference match on Friday afternoon.
It was the fifth straight overtime game at home for the Aggies who fell to 2-3-2. The Hornets, who picked up five points for Sacramento State in the all-sports Causeway Cup competition between the schools, improved to 3-2-1.
Freshman Matt Wiesenfarth scored the equalizer for UC Davis with only four minutes left in regulation. Eddie Manella's cross into the box rattled around and found Matt Sheldon who trapped the ball in between several defenders. Sheldon dropped a pass to Wiesenfarth who fired his shot into the upper left corner.
"This team is playing hard," said head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "We're creating enough chances to win games, we're defending well enough to win games and right now the soccer gods just haven't been on our side for the last few games. Overall I'm proud of my team, I'm happy with the way we're playing, and the results will fall our way soon."
UC Davis struck first with a goal from Elliott Hord in the 12th minute. After Alex Aguiar crossed the ball into the six-yard box, Lance Patterson was on hand with a header that ricocheted off the goalpost. Hord collected the bounce and fired a shot into the back of the net to put the Aggies up 1-0.
Sacramento State responded before the end of the half with a goal from Adam Bettencourt. He got a hold of the ball in the middle of the field and took his shot, which bounced past UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni and into the lower right corner.
The teams remained deadlocked as time wound down in regulation. At the 82:43 mark Sacramento State put themselves ahead with a goal from Max Alvarez. His hard shot from outside the 18-yard box was too much for Zeenni, giving the Hornets the late 2-1 lead.
Wiesenfarth came up huge for UC Davis only four minutes later as he connected with Sheldon to send the game to overtime.
The score remained tied through the first overtime, despite a touch from Aguiar in the 92nd minute that bounced off the crossbar and was cleared out of play.
Bernard's golden goal came in the 103rd minute when Alvarez' corner kick bounced around in the six-yard box, before finding Bettencourt. His header was deflected back towards Bernard who one-touched the shot into the back of the net for the win.
The Aggies posed several chances throughout the game, including a shot from Sheldon in the 48th minute that hit the crossbar. He finished with four shots, three of which were on goal.
Zeenni registered two saves on the day, including a big one in the 77th minute when he tipped a high shot from Alvarez over the crossbar and out of play.
Chris Bettencourt led Sacramento State offensively with six shots while Alvarez' saw three of his four attempts land on target.
UC Davis opens Big West Conference action on Wednesday at 3 p.m. when the Aggies host Cal State Northridge.
