RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Senior midfielder Juan Gutierrez hauled in a pass from teammate Andrew Villalobos then delivered the game-winning goal from 20 yards with 26 seconds remaining in the second overtime, lifting UC Riverside to a 2-1 win over UC Davis in a non-conference men's soccer match Sunday.
The Aggies, who have lost three straight, even their record at 3-3-2 for the season. The Highlanders improve to 2-5-1 overall.
Senior Jordan Arias delivered first blood in the contest, scoring on an assist by Erasmo Solorzano in the 37th minute. That lead held up for almost the entirety of regulation play until Aggie freshman Juan Hernandez sent a 45-yard bomb into the UCR net with just 88 seconds remaining in the second half.
The Highlanders outshot the Aggies by a 15-7 advantage, most of which came after the halftime break. UCR posted eight attempts in the second half (to UC Davis' three), then delivered five shots in the extra frame.
The Aggie men return home to host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, September 28, then participate in the men's soccer version of the Causeway Classic with a game at Sacramento State on October 2.
