DAVIS, Calif. -
Senior midfielder Keith Gilbert sent a long assist to Ryan Shaw then scored a goal of his own to lead UC Davis to a 2-1 win over Sacramento State in a men's collegiate soccer match at Aggie Field in front of 570 fans Sunday.
The Aggies move to 3-4-1 on the year, winning their second straight outing. The Hornets drop to 1-4-1 overall.
Gilbert led UC Davis with five total shots, including three on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Charles Warne had six saves against the one goal in the Aggie net.
For Sacramento State, Patrick Nelle attempted six of his team's 14 total shots. Hornet keeper Matt McDougall recorded nine saves, including seven after the halftime break.
"I thought our team shape was outstanding," said UC Davis head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "It's something we've been focusing on. Our team defense was great once again. We had a shutout on Friday [against San Diego State], then basically shut them out except for the penalty kick. Overall, everybody played well. It's always a battle against Sacramento State. They are a well-coached team with good players. Unfortunately for them, things aren't going their way right now."
UC Davis first reached the scoreboard in the 32nd minute, when Gilbert lobbed a long pass from the left sideline to a streaking Shaw, who collected the serve just outside the penalty box. Shaw beat one defender, then blasted a shot out of the reach of McDougall.
Shaw's goal, his fourth on the year, followed one of the Hornets' first-half scoring opporunities. Less than three minutes prior, senior striker Patrick Nelle had beaten three Aggie defenders, steered high into the penalty area, then fired a shot directly in to the hands of an awaiting Warne.
The Aggies had another scoring chance early in the second half when Shaw's cross found a wide-open Sule Anibaba. However, the freshman's shot sailed over the crossbar. McDougall blocked shots by Aggies Greg Hammond and Connor Voss during the next four minutes before Sacramento State enjoyed its own offensive threat. A hard Nelle shot caromed off the Aggie backline, forcing a corner kick. Hornet midfielder Marco Ramirez sent a corner kick into the fray, eventually finding Juan Carlos Cortez. Cortez fired a header at the UC Davis cage, but Warne was there to make the stop.
In the 68th minute, Gilbert collected an errant Hornet pass in the midfield, attacked the opposing net, but missed wide left. However, Gilbert capitalized on another similar opportunity at the 79:05 mark. The senior midfielder again stole the ball near the center circle, then promptly advanced the ball all the way to the Hornet cage for his first season goal.
Sac State managed to ward off a shutout loss when Ramirez earned a penalty kick in the 87th minute. Ramirez fired lower left, but Warne deflected the attempt with a diving save. The Hornet midfielder quickly recovered his own rebound and sent the putback to the opposite end of the net.
UC Davis returns to action on October 1 for a road match against future Big West Conference rival UC Irvine.
