IRVINE, Calif. - Alex Aguiar and Pat Reese put away goals in the first half, then Kevin Schulte sealed a 3-1 men's soccer victory over UC Irvine on Sunday at Anteater Stadium in Irvine.

UC Davis improves to 1-1 in Big West play with its first conference win of the year. The Aggies also snap a three-game losing streak to move to 3-4-4 on the year.

UC Irvine drops to 0-2 in conference play and 3-7-1 overall.

Aguiar gave the Aggies an early 1-0 lead with his 12th minute header. Ryan Gross was credited with his team-leading third assist of the year after the freshman launched one of his patented throw-ins into the penalty area. The throw found Aguiar, who headed it into the back of the net. It was Aguiar's second goal of the year.

Reese then scored his second goal of the year in the 28th minute with an impressive show of offense. His first shot was deflected by UC Irvine goalkeeper Michael Breslin, but Reese collected his own rebound and shot past Breslin to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead.

UC Davis took just three total shots in the first half.

The Aggies extended their lead just after halftime when Schulte scored in the 47th minute on an assist by Nick Grigoriev. Schulte found himself in front of an open net after Breslin came off his line. Grigoriev flicked the ball on to Schulte who drove it past Breslin and into the back of the net.

With the 3-0 lead, the UC Davis defense held on to the shutout while Omar Zeenni came up with four of his six total saves.

In the 60th minute, Lester Hayes III scored the Anteaters' lone goal of the game. Pavle Atanackovic settled a free ball and found Hayes who pushed the ball past Zeenni.

Zeenni made two more saves in the closing minutes of the half to help preserve the 3-1 win.

UC Davis begins a three-game homestand on Oct. 5, hosting UC Riverside in a 4 p.m. contest at Aggie Soccer Field.
