PHOENIX, Ariz. -
Junior forward Paul Dagenais scored his first goal of the season which was all the Aggie defense would need as it posted its sixth-straight shutout as UC Davis defeated Grand Canyon 1-0 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer game Friday evening at the GCU Soccer Complex.
With the win the Aggies improve to 5-1-3 on the season, 4-1-1 in CCAA play while Grand Canyon falls to 2-6-1, 2-6 in conference action.
It was a scoreless battle for much of the first half as the defense of both teams dominated play. UC Davis managed to get off just four shots in the first half while Grand Canyon attempted only three. In the 43rd minute, freshman David Keller sent a cross from the left side to Dagenais who then sent it past Antelope goalkeeper Byron Bent for his first goal of the year.
That would prove to be enough as UC Davis' defense took over from there. The Aggies limited Grand Canyon to just four shots in the second half and senior goalkeeper Nic Platter made five saves as he increased his career shutout record to 16. Going back to a Sept. 10 game against Sonoma State, the Aggie defense has not allowed a goal in over 477 minutes of play. The sixth-straight shutout also sets a school record for UC Davis.
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday when it faces UC San Diego in La Jolla. Gametime is set for 2pm.
