DAVIS, Calif. - Despite outshooting its guest by a 19-9 margin, UC Davis was unable to hold off No. 6 Cal State Northridge in a reunion of last year's Big West Conference championship match, falling 2-0 at Aggie Soccer Field Sunday afternoon in front of a crowd of 668.

The Aggies even their record to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference. The Matadors improve to 10-1-0 for the season and remain unbeaten in Big West play at 2-0-0.

UC Davis fired seven of the first eight shots of the game and 10 of the 13 before halftime. The Aggies also managed a 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. However, CSUN got on the board in the 32nd minute when senior Beto Velasquez delivered a long cross to senior Brian Behrad, who headed the ball into the high right corner. The Matadors added their second goal in the 82nd after a turnover by the Aggie defense allowed Steven Manios to find Edwin Rivas for a clean shot from 12 yards out.

The Aggies seized early control of the opportunities during the first 20 minutes of the contest. Senior Nick Grigoriev fired the first shot less than a minute in, getting behind the CSUN defense before blasting his shot over the cage. Ryan Gross and Matt Sheldon also managed close-call attempts in the initial minutes but could not put anything on frame.

By the time Behrad and Velasquez subbed into the game at the 20th minute, the Aggies had taken five shots with five corner kicks but could not score. Sheldon led UC Davis with four shots while senior Alex Aguiar managed three. However, only Gross and junior defender Ramon Martin Del Campo put shots on goal for the Aggies.

UC Davis was coming off upsets of then-No. 25 New Mexico and No. 25 UC Irvine entering Sunday's contest. The Aggies return to the road for Big West Conference action at Cal State Fullerton (Friday) and UC Riverside (Sunday) next weekend.
