DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Matt Wiesenfarth scored for the second straight game to tie the game in the 31st minute, but UC Santa Barbara found the back of the net in the 96th minute to take a 2-1 Big West Conference men's soccer win in overtime on Saturday at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis.

UC Davis drops to 4-6-2 overall and 2-2 in conference play while UC Santa Barbara improved to 8-3-2 and won its first league game of the year.

The Gauchos came out strong from the start, taking six shots and winning two corner kicks before Wiesenfarth had the Aggies' first attempt in the seventh minute of play.

James Kiffe put UC Santa Barbara on the board at the 10:54 mark when the Gauchos won an indirect free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Luis Silva touched the ball to Kiffe, who fired a shot on goal and just past the outstretched hand of UC Davis goalkeeper Omar Zeenni.

Wiesenfarth struck for the Aggies in the 31st minute. In front of a nearly sold out crowd of 938 fans, the freshman received a pass from Matt Sheldonjust inside the six-yard box. He cut around a defender, then drove home his shot into the upper right corner of the goal.

Wiesenfarth has now scored in three of the last four games for UC Davis.

In the second half, UC Davis nearly took the lead with a shot from Alex Henry in the 67th minute, but his attempt went wide. In the 74th minute, Tony Rascon'shard shot from the left side of the goal just skimmed over the top of the crossbar and out of play.

Sam Garza would knock in the gamewinner six minutes into the first overtime period. After gathering the ball in midfield, Garza dribbled down the field, then fired a shot from inside the 18 yard box which skipped into the lower right corner of the net, giving UC Santa Barbara the 2-1 victory.


 

 

Wiesenfarth and Alex Aguiarled UC Davis offensively with three shots apiece, while Garza had five shots for UC Santa Barbara.

Zeenni recorded four saves for the Aggies while UCSB's Andre Grandt made three saves.

UC Davis returns to action on Oct. 15 in a 7 p.m. matchup against Cal State Northridge in Northridge.
